SEPTEMBER
SYD BARRETT:
Mark: "Whenever I'm asked what my dream job would be...in the past I've always said something for Pink Floyd as they were my favourite band...and the nearest I came to experiencing fandom way back in the late 60's when I was fan club member 425! I saw Pink Floyd many times then and have continued to love (most) of their work ever since. Imagine my insane delight to be asked to paint a portrait of Syd for a DVD sleeve for 'The Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd Story'. I was also asked to create a montage for the inner sleeve...and had this been 6 years ago I would have still had all that fanclub stuff! But I sold a lot of it to a collector to finance the purchase of an Applemac to keep me afloat...I was broke at the time goddammit...an affliction most artists experience at odd times in their careers. I bitterly regret making that decision now of course! So I've had to beg, borrow and steal from friends who weren't so rash and still have some of their collections intact!
I am intending to paint something that remains faithful to the spirit of Syd and Pink Floyd of those early days, in particular the UFO Club/Hapshash-And-The -Coloured-Coat style of art that so inspired me as a teenager. The DVD has already been released in the UK, so this will be the American NTSC version."

The exhibition in Norway was very successful. Mark opened the show, displaying 35 of his best designs as Giclée prints, on the Saturday afternoon July 3 at 2:00pm and unveiled his the new painting 'The Fool' half an hour afterwards. Some of the fans had travelled many hours to be there and Mark really enjoyed chatting to them, answering questions about his work over the years and discussing the new pieces on show. A working version of a new painting 'Lepidoptera' was shown and he had many enquiries about the band RAK who commissioned it. There will be a website soon for them, but for now there is some info on the writer and vocalist Dave Thwaites' site: http://www.spiritualmind.org/rak.htm
After the exhibition opening the Marillion tribute band, Misplaced Neighbourhood, played an acoustic set outside the hotel bar. In the evening they played the full electric set at another bar in Holmsbu, with a sell out show dedicated to Marillion old and new. They went down a storm, and reckoned it was the best set they'd ever played and the most enthusiastic crowd they'd ever had! The celebrating went on until the early hours. The exhibition continued until Wednesday and Mark was around for a few hours each day to chat to visitors to the show. Mark and his family; wife Julie, daughter Hannah and son Sean (who modelled as the jester for the new painting) had a great time at the show and had a very relaxed holiday at the wonderful hotel which is situated in such a stunning area...many thanks go to Morten Eliassen for organising such a fantastic week for them.

Mark has had some great news, in his own words...
"Well I must be doing something right, both 'Lightbulbsun' and 'The Wicker Man' have been accepted for this year's Association of Illustrators 'Images 25-The Best Of British Illustration' book and also at least one of them (hopefully both) will be included in the 'Images 25 exhibition' at The Royal College of Art next April!! Both images will be included in the Association of Illustrator's website: www.aoi.co.uk at the same time as publication next April too. This is good news, I used to
enter every year for this but never got in. It was Harry, my Agent who pushed me into entering again as he loved the new stuff so much. Literally thousands of artists enter every year, so the competition's stiff. Imagine...Eddie at the Royal College of Art!"
